Grants

The Department of Corrections provides grants to various victim service organizations with funds generated by the sale of confiscated inmate contraband and also from funds raised by inmate organizations. Fifteen percent of funds generated by inmate groups is devoted to enhancing victim services around the state. Announcements for grant opportunities are presented periodically.

The Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault in Florence received a check for $1,000 on April 26, 1999. The money was used to provide specialized regional training for law enforcement officers who respond to domestic violence calls.


On April 27, 1999, Director William D. Catoe presented a check for $3,000 to the Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse for a shelter located in Beaufort, SC. The money bought a security system for the shelter.



The Department of Corrections presented a check for $580 to the Sexual Trauma and Counseling Center of Greenwood on February 3, 2000. The money was used to purchase special equipment and supplies for child sexual assault cases.

Other sexual assault centers who received funds are:
-Pickens County Rape Crisis Center
-Grand Strand Community Against Rape Crisis Center, which serves Horry and Georgetown Counties
-Greenville Sexual Trauma Center
-Sexual Assault Center for Kershaw and Lee Counties
-Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault, which covers Chesterfield, Marlboro, Marion, Williamsburg,  Dillon, Darlington, and Florence Counties.
